Have you ever heard someone say “I don’t like scones”? I’m going to bet no. Scones are one of those magical foods that are universally loved by everyone. Over the past year, I’ve really started to appreciate a good, well made scone. They’re a unique, versatile pastry that can somehow pull off both savory and sweet flavors and they are a staple on the pastry shelf in most coffee shops.
Despite their popularity, they seem to fly under the radar, usually unnoticed, and always unappreciated. They don’t get talked about like the popular pastries (ie muffins) despite having better overall qualities. In my opinion, they’re a constantly overshadowed pastry and Im here to give them their time to shine.
When judging scones, I judge on the classic 0-10 scale and I look at three qualities in particular. First, texture. Im of the opinion that scones should have a slightly crunchy outer crust with a soft, warm airy interior. This is tough to achieve. Second, flavor. I think this is self explanatory. Third, consistency. This measures if the texture and flavor are consistent throughout or are some parts crunchier or less balanced in flavor than others.
- Mo’z Cafe

Tucked away on 5th St just off the hustle and bustle of Market, Mo’z Cafe is a cozy breakfast spot down in SoMa. They have those classic chalkboard menu’s you can find at similar brunch spots throughout the bay. They’re incredibly friendly and serve coffee in huge mugs, which made them the perfect place to be on the rainy Saturday that I stopped in.
The Scone
Overall: 8.5/10
The Good
This scone was AWESOME. It had the exact soft and airy texture on the inside that you want in a scone and the texture was consistent throughout. The flavor really surprised me for a basic blueberry scone. It struck the perfect balance between the sweetness of the blueberry and the heartiness of the bread. The glaze gave a light sugary kick that tied it together perfectly. This was one of those scones that leaves you incredibly satisfied and glad you pad the extra few bucks to get it.
The Bad
What holds this scone back from being a top-shelf type scone is texture. While the texture inside was great, the texture on the outside left a bit to be desired. It definitely had a little crunch but not the contrast that I would prefer in my scones. Additionally, I would have loved if they would have warmed it up but thats not a huge issue.
