Within walking distance of the main base area of the ski slope in Keystone, Colorado is a hidden strip with some breakfast cafe gems. One of these is the Steep Brewing and Coffee company. It’s relatively new, opening just before Christmas in 2020, has a trendy vibe, and is technically a “nano-brewery” as well in case you wanted a side beer with your coffee. The people behind the counter were incredibly cheerful and all around great people. Their scones are made in Denver at a Bavarian bakery by a guy named Klaus, which is pretty damn cool.
The Scone
Overall: 7.8/10
The Good
I got a lemon blueberry scone. Probably one of the best flavors I’ve had in a scone. A seemingly simple combo that I’d never thought of before, topped with thick sugar crystals made for a great taste. Additionally the bake was extremely consistent and made for a great scone.
The Bad
The only issue I had was texture. I’m a big texture guy and this scone just didn’t have the crust I was looking for. While the inside was good, it was rather soft on the outside which is one of the defining characteristics of a good scone in my opinion. Now, this may be because it wasn’t made on site and had lost it’s crispness in transit but I can only review on when I eat it and that’s just the way the scone crumbles (or doesn’t in this case).
